Based on an anonymous MS. dating from about 1580; Soares was identified as the author by Serafim Leite (História da Companhia de Jesus no Brasil, 2, século XVI - a obra, Lisbon & Rio de Janeiro: 582, 1938), according to Whitehead (1978: 500). The description of the manatee is said to be similar to that of F. Cardim.
