Earlier publications of this work (in 1826, 1924, 1964, and, with Engl. transl., in 1922 ed. of Gândavo, 1576) were based on copies later and less reliable than the Sloane MS. (Whitehead, 1977: 173-174). Mentions Brazilian manatees in chaps. 4 (Ilhéus) and 7 (Espírito Santo).
