Describes the near-capsizing of a boat, supposedly by a manatee (1: 221), and gives a tolerably accurate description and illustration of a manatee encountered in Surinam (2: 175-176, pl. facing 176). Stedman also mentions "mermaids" described to him, which he takes to be fish, though his description of them better fits manatees (2: 177). Also mentions the natives' fear of the "Watra Mama", but offers no identification of it (2: 178). In 1971 & 1972 eds., sir. material at 121-122, 316-317.
